Dr. Terris:

Typically, you shouldn’t gain weight following the thyroidectomy, and the reason is we replace the function of the thyroid with a thyroid hormone and that prevents that problem. If you didn’t take thyroid hormone after your thyroidectomy, then yes, in fact, you could potentially put on weight, but typically, no.
