Dr. Legato:
I think that men must become more aware of the fact that they not only can get ill, but become ill and seriously ill at ages that are younger than the women in their lives. I think it behooves them to take the responsibility for that on themselves and not hope that their wife puts their pills out at the breakfast table, as so many men tell me, or makes the appointment for the doctor, as so many men tell me.
Men have to assume the responsibility for their own health and well-being and resist the impulse to sort of suck it up and soldier on, no matter what their discontents or their symptoms are. It’s important for them to know that by the time they are 40, the chief cause of death of men is heart disease and that those men who have coronary disease, three-quarters of them will be dead by the time they are 65.
Coronary disease can be prevented and certainly treated, and the lives of patients with coronary disease can be prolonged if we know it exists and what to do about it.
About Dr. Legato:
Dr. Marianne J. Legato is an internationally known academic physician, author, lecturer and specialist in women's health. She is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and the Founder and Director of the Partnership for Women’s Health at Columbia University. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School. Dr. Legato founded the Partnership for Women's Health at Columbia University in 1997. It is the first collaboration between academic medicine and the private sector focused solely on gender-specific medicine: the science of how normal human biology differs between men and women and of how the diagnosis and treatment of disease differs as a function of gender. Dr. Legato has received many awards for her leadership role in women's health.
