VIDEO: Dr. Hilkovitz - Diabetes, Why Does It Sometimes Result In Amputation?

January 8, 2009 - 2:34pm 196 reads 0 comments

Dr. Hilkovitz explains why diabetes can lead to amputation.

Dr. Hilkovitz:
Diabetes attacks our blood vessels, and the blood vessels also run into the legs and the feet supplying blood, and they also supply the tiny little nerves that help our legs to have feeling and so on.

In diabetes, you develop neuritis or neuropathy as it’s called, where you don’t have good feeling. Your feet could get injured and you don’t know it. Then you get infection and because there’s a poor blood supply, it doesn’t heal well. So you form abscesses and ulcers, and it’s impossible to get those healed, usually ends up in amputation.
