VIDEO: Dr. Hilkovitz - Grams Of Carbs Per Meal, How Many Should Diabetics Consume?

January 8, 2009 - 4:53pm 857 reads 0 comments

Dr. Hilkovitz shares how many grams of carbohydrates (carbs) diabetes should eat per meal.

Dr. Hilkovitz:
You need to eat about 45 grams per meal, but it really depends on what your occupation is because if you’re a ditch-digger and you do a lot of manual labor, you may need 60 grams of carb per meal. So first it depends on the occupation, but for most people who are relatively sedentary, 45 grams is good meal. Now, to find out how to do that, you have to consult the manual on carbohydrate counting, and I have an easy system for that which I hand out to my patients, basically breaks all servings down into 15 grams of carb, and so they have three servings per meal which is the 45, and that’s useful also because I base my insulin doses on the amount of carb that’s eaten.
