VIDEO: Dr. Hilkovitz - Test Fasting Blood Sugar Levels, Why Is This Important?

January 8, 2009 - 3:43pm 380 reads 0 comments

Dr. Hilkovitz shares why it is important to test fasting blood sugar levels.

Dr. Hilkovitz:
I use fasting blood sugar in the morning before breakfast as a way of measuring whether I am giving adequate insulin at night or adequate metformin with the dinner meal. I do not use it as a diagnostic test because I find that people don’t fast like they should for 12 hours, and if you get numbers that are slightly above normal, you don’t really know what to do with those numbers and it leads to the false impression that a lot of people have, that "I have only got a touch of diabetes,” when it’s two points above normal, and there’s no such thing as a "touch of diabetes." You either have it or you haven’t, but the expression came about because of incorrect fasting blood sugar testing.
