Dr. Hilkovitz explains why diabetes is such an expensive disease to treat.

Dr. Hilkovitz:
It's expensive because first of all, a patient with diabetes has a lot of medications to buy. They have to buy testing equipment, they have to buy needles to stick themselves with, and also the complications of diabetes are extremely expensive. They lead to heart bypass surgery, stroke treatments, opening up blood vessels in the legs, and these are all inpatient, expensive procedures as well as the testing for these things, like you have to have EKGs (electrocardiograms) and echocardiograms and all the special tests. In addition to that, the cost of treating kidney failure and blindness and strokes is very high.

Dr. Gabriel Hilkovitz has been in private practice for 51 years working in internal medicine, primary care, with an emphasis in diabetes and works in connection with the Arizona Heart Institute. He is a former Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Hilkovitz was born and educated in South Africa and also engaged in academia in London, England and the United States.
