Dr. Raczkowski:
It’s a method by which we can make these small incisions and allow that surgery done through those small incisions, but the robot itself is completely controlled by the surgeon. It mimics our hand motion so that those little tiny instruments become our hands so that those, the process by which we repair the valves, replace valves, do the bypass procedures–they are all the same. It’s just that it’s done through those very tiny incisions.
The actual operations are identical to the procedures that you would have if you had normal open-heart procedure with the normal, large incision.
