VIDEO: Dr. Raczkowski - What Is Robotic Cardiac Surgery?

September 23, 2009 - 6:05pm 191 reads 0 comments

Dr. Raczkowski describes robotic cardiac surgery and explains how it is performed.

Dr. Raczkowski:
It’s a method by which we can make these small incisions and allow that surgery done through those small incisions, but the robot itself is completely controlled by the surgeon. It mimics our hand motion so that those little tiny instruments become our hands so that those, the process by which we repair the valves, replace valves, do the bypass procedures–they are all the same. It’s just that it’s done through those very tiny incisions.

The actual operations are identical to the procedures that you would have if you had normal open-heart procedure with the normal, large incision.

About Dr. Raczkowski, M.D.:
Dr. Allen Raczkowski, certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, leads the robotic heart surgery program at Banner Heart Hospital. He has performed nearly 400 procedures using that surgical system, making the Banner Heart Hospital robotic surgery program one of the top three in the nation.
