VIDEO: Dr. Russell - Obesity, How Does It Affect A Person's Musculoskeletal System?

June 12, 2009 - 6:17pm 383 reads 0 comments

Dr. Russell introduces himself and shares how an individual's musculoskeletal system is affected by obesity.

Dr. Russell:
Well I am Dr. George Russell and I practice orthopedic trauma surgery at the University of Mississippi. I have a special interest in those injuries about the hip socket and I have a special research interest in obesity.

Obesity has a number of implications in terms of the musculoskeletal system. In the previous interview, we discussed or showed some examples of the effects upon children such that the very large children can have crippling knee deformity such that they can’t even ambulate. And then as we go forward in terms of the adults, we have noticed a large, a significant number of increased complications from very basic, if you will, routine surgeries such as total knee replacements and total hip replacements.

About Dr. Russell, M.D.:
Dr. George V. Russell, M.D., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Denison University in 1988 and his M.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992. He subsequently completed his general surgery internship and orthopedic residency at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. He then completed an orthopedic trauma fellowship at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Washington. Dr. Russell was formerly Assistant Professor in both the Orthopedic Trauma and Physician Assistant Studies at the University of South Alabama in Mobile before joining our department in October of 2000. He has authored or co-authored many published articles and presents both nationally and internationally on his specialty of orthopedic trauma.
