Dr. Russell explains why he believes obesity has become a worldwide issue.

Dr. Russell:
There are a lot of people doing a lot of serious work on that. I’ll just offer my insight into that. I think that there are a number of different reasons. One is the, more countries become more industrialized; we exercise much less with basic routines such as walking–walking to work, walking to the grocery store. There’s a very… how do you say, the food industry has produced a lot of food which are very calorie-dense. And also the people without a lot of funds or a lot of resources rely heavily upon affordable foods, which are generally not the best for you, and again, are very calorie-dense.

About Dr. Russell, M.D.:
Dr. George V. Russell, M.D., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Denison University in 1988 and his M.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992. He subsequently completed his general surgery internship and orthopedic residency at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. He then completed an orthopedic trauma fellowship at the University of Washington/Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Washington. Dr. Russell was formerly Assistant Professor in both the Orthopedic Trauma and Physician Assistant Studies at the University of South Alabama in Mobile before joining our department in October of 2000. He has authored or co-authored many published articles and presents both nationally and internationally on his specialty of orthopedic trauma.
