Dr. Sorof:
Ladies, I have three tips for you if you would like to reduce your bad cholesterol level and increase your good cholesterol level. The number one thing is to watch what you are eating. You want to eat healthy. Choose foods that are low, that are not fried, that are cooked in a way that it’s broiled or boiled, that they are grilled in such a fashion that they just have a little bit of light oil on them so that you are not in heavy butter or heavy sauces.
The number two thing you can do is exercise because that will increase your good cholesterol which is cardioprotective and it will decrease your bad cholesterol. And the last thing you can do is stop smoking because we do know that that decreases your good cholesterol levels and that would be a negative and take away from what you are trying to do with the other portion of your diet.
In addition to modifying your exercise, being overweight predisposes somebody to having high triglycerides. Triglycerides are small particles that travel around one’s body. They are very elevated in smokers and they are elevated in people who are overweight or obese. What we found is that these also predispose people to chronic illnesses such as diabetes.
There is something called the metabolic syndrome, that if you have very high triglycerides and low good cholesterol or your H-type cholesterol, this can predispose you. These are two factors for developing what’s called the metabolic syndrome and this is a predisposing factor for diabetes type-2, which predisposes you to heart disease.

Dr. Suzanne Sorof, M.D., is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. She earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She also completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals Residency Program. Dr. Sorof completed her cardiology fellowship at MetroHealth Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She then completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Sorof has extensive training and experience in all aspects of clinical cardiology as well as cardiac and peripheral intervention.
