Dr. Wilson:
Fish oils I recommend for a couple of different reasons. One is that all hormones are made from fats, and by making sure you have these healthy Omega-3 fats from fish oil ensures that you’re going to have the healthy fats to make healthy hormones.
Fish oils are also really important to general health and immune system, and so that’s another reason. keeping you well while you’re trying to get pregnant. Another reason is that fish oils are very important to mood and stabilizing mood.
What the research shows is that women who take fish oil have much lower likelihood of postpartum depression, for example. So I always recommend fish oil during the pregnancy in order to really help make sure that you’re going to feel well after the pregnancy.
The other reason for fish oil is that it’s really important for the baby’s brain development. So once you are pregnant you want to have the Omega-3 fats there for the baby as well.
