Dr. Sorenson describes how vitamin D helps to reduce plaque build-up in heart arteries.
Dr. Sorenson, Ed.D.:
Well, the way that it does that, the way that the vitamin D reduces the plaque in arteries is to reduce the amount of calcification. This has been proven that those who have the highest vitamin D levels have very little calcification in the arteries.
Now whether or not, I haven’t seen the research as to whether or not if we have high calcification in the arteries that we can actually give vitamin D and that will reduce the calcification, but if I were a betting man, I would say yes, that probably is the case. But we do know that it reduces calcification and therefore helps to reduce plaquing or reduce the chance of plaquing in the first place, and we expect that it will reduce plaquing itself once the plaque is already in place.
