In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Daily Dose", Bailey Mosier discusses whether engaging too much "fat talk" can have a negative influence and lead to poor body image and depression.

Hi, I’m Bailey Mosier. This is your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose.

We’ve all heard it or even taken part in it before – something researchers refer to ask fat talk. Asking yourself or your friends, “Does this make me look fat?” will only give you a bigger complex about your body.

Researchers from the University of Arizona surveyed 85 women and 33 men and found that people who often make comments about their weight are more likely to have a poor body image and to suffer from depression. Examples of fat talk include people making comments about what their eating and exercise habits should be, fears of becoming overweight, and perception of their own weight and shape, as well as voicing comparisons with other people in these areas.

The more often a person engaged in fat talk, the lower his or her body satisfaction and the higher the level of depression. These results suggest that expressing weight-related concerns, which is common especially among women, has very real, very negative effects.

That wraps up your EmpowHER, HER Daily Dose. Join me here at EmpowHER.com every weekday for your next dose of women’s health.

You can still run programs written for older versions of Windows, but this is possible only on PCs and ZOPO ZP500+ Smart Phone: Windows 8 tablets (at least those which have ARM processors and run Windows 8 RT) won't have the traditional Windows desktop at all.

Often, people want to be assured that they are okay. So asking "does this make me look fat?" is done in hopes that their friends will respond with affirmation that they look just fine.

This is complete nonsense! People who have a poor body image and possibly suffer from depression tend to engage in "fat talk." "Fat talk" itself does not CAUSE poor body image (although it may reinforce it.)
