Dr. DeBarros:

Hi, my name is John DeBarros. I am a board certified bariatric surgeon practicing out at Banner Estrella Hospital. I am board certified in general surgery. I am also a Fellow at the American College of Surgeons. I am also a Fellow of the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. Currently my specialty is bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery is just a fancy name for surgery for patients who are obese, more obese, overweight or morbidly obese. Typically the criteria for bariatric surgery, right now we use what’s called the Body Mass Index, okay?

Body Mass Index, according to National Institutes of Health criteria for patients who qualify for bariatric surgery, are between a Body Mass Index of approximately 35 or somewhere from anywhere from 75 to 100 pounds overweight and greater.

If your Body Mass Index is between 35 and 40 some plans and some different insurance companies require additional medical problems. If your BMI is greater than 40 then most insurance plans will cover that straight through.
