Dr. John DeBarros explains how obesity affects women and men differently. Dr. DeBarros is devoted to a comprehensive surgical weight loss management program that emphasizes caring as part of the journey to restored health at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. DeBarros:
Well obesity affects women I think in many different aspects as compared to male. First of all, there are a lot of psychological aspects, social aspects of women that kind of lend themselves more towards social situations with obesity.

In terms of medical problems, I think, in some aspects, they are more weighted towards women like heart disease is a big deal in women now. In the past it was sort of kind of passed over, a lot of women having coronary artery disease and heart attacks. We see that it’s now equivalent to males as it were in the past that was thought that it was not as great in the female population as in the male population.

Also there is a number of other problems, diabetes and so forth. One of the biggest, you know, issues for women also socially, you know, there is, I believe it carries more of a social stigmata in women that are overweight than males.
