Dr. John DeBarros shares a memorable bariatric patient success story about a 74-year-old woman whose life was changed after receiving an adjustable gastric band. Dr. DeBarros is a member of The American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeons and practices his craft at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. DeBarros:
We have several patients and there are several stories that are aspiratory to our cause here. If you walk around our office we have several women who can show you how their lives changed. Just look at their pictures and they put on narrative underneath it, but I have one patient who started out, actually she was a 74-year-old woman who came in here and said, “Doctor, I really think that my quality of my life is terrible. I have no energy. I really enjoy and love my grandchildren and I can’t play with them and I have a lot of medical issues and I just know that I have kind of done this to myself and I don’t really expect tremendous amount of success, but what I’d like is just a little bit of success so that I can at least play with my grandchildren,” and she was about 278 pounds.

Well lo and behold, and she was also a registered nurse and works with a lot of the Indian tribes, so lo and behold we did a band on her and she came back about a year later, and of course we had been following her all the way through, and she came back in weighing 150 pounds.

She was off about three-quarters of her medication, you know, because of her age she still was on a lot of different meds, but about three-quarters of them; most of them were reduced or stopped altogether.

She came in with her grandchildren and actually in a jogging suit because she has just finished going to the park with them and couldn’t tell you how her life had changed. She was ecstatic; she was happy and she said to me that it was worth every bit of the risk that she had taken, and that’s only one story. There are several stories that are just like that.

Well in terms of a surgeon, it makes me feel great but more importantly, in terms of a person, I was able to touch somebody’s life and affect them in a way that you can really see a cause and effect and I know there are several docs who will take out cancers and things and save people’s lives, but that’s one way of saving a life. Another way of saving a life is to give somebody their life back and have them feel good and feel good about themselves and be off of lot of medications and it really is very, very satisfying when you see those kinds of things and it gives you a great feeling in your heart as you are driving home.
