LAP-BAND® And Gastric Bypass: Are These Reversible Procedures? - Dr. DeBarros

Dr. John DeBarros explains if the LAP-BAND® and gastric bypass procedures are reversible. Dr. DeBarros is an experienced bariatric surgeon at Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. DeBarros:
The LAP-BAND® bariatric surgery is completely reversible and that is sort of one of the beauties or the LAP-BAND®, and the LAP-BAND®, because it is such a small device, it’s placed around the upper portion of the stomach, it can be removed laparoscopically very quickly with very little sequelae. Most patients can go home the same day after a LAP-BAND® is removed.

As to gastric bypass, for the most part you can consider that an irreversible surgery. That’s why patients who are going to undergo gastric bypass have to really understand the surgery and that also goes back to the program aspect and the doctor.

The doctor has to really explain all the different types of procedures available, the risks and benefits of each procedure, and the support that’s going to be entailed for each procedure.
