Dr. Blackstone:

My name is Robin Blackstone, and I am the Medical Director of the Scottsdale Bariatric Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, and our group specializes in caring for obese patients who are interested in a permanent weight loss solution through surgical procedures.

An adjustable gastric band is a piece of Silastic®. It’s a plastic ring that goes around the top of the stomach and it closes off a part of the stomach and allows you only to put food into a small portion of the stomach rather than into the large part of the stomach. So what it does is it restricts the amount of food that you can take in. It doesn’t interrupt anything about your normal digestive process. It just helps you to eat less food.
