Former White House Doc, Dr. Connie Mariano returns with advice for women about what they can do about cervical cancer.
I'm Dr. Connie Mariano, Chief Clinical Officer with EmpowHER, with what you can do about cervical cancer. There are new guidelines for cervical cancer screening, and what you need to do depends on your age.
According to the American Cancer Society and the U.S. Prevention Task Force, women between 30 and 65 with no risk factors should get a pap smear and HPV test once every five years. Women between 20 and 29 should get a pap test once every three years. The HPV test is not recommended for this age group. Screening for cervical cancer for women under 21 or over 65 is not reommended.
Remember there are special risk factors including a history of cervical cancer, exposure to diethylstilbestrol in utero, and a compromised immune system. Any of this medical history may change the screening recommendations.
