I had a hysterectomy because of uterine and bladder prolapse. My dr said I did not need my uterus anymore. I had 2 kids and did not really want more. I was only 32 and there were no computers to look up things. I had small fibroids, but not bad. I kept my ovaries. I don't know if it was the right thing to do or not-having the hysterectomy vs just a repair. I wish I had known more about it at the time. I thought it(the uterus) just sat there, but it does play a role in many different ways. I think there are times when it is necessary. thank goodness they don't do it so automatically anymore. I had a difficult birth with my last child and should have had a c section and then it probably would not have been needed, but that is another story.

I just had someone email me today to ask the question if she should have her ovaries removed or not because she needs to have her uterus removed. The doctors have suggested that they remove the ovaries at the same time.
You have to weight all of the factors.
Why are you having your uterus removed, should be your first question.
Then, you need to do your homework from there.
In my case, I did not need my ovaries removed but was scared into it. I was told that 20% of women will come back with ovarian cancer after having a partial hysterectomy.
Has this happened to any of you? I'd love to know.

I had a partial and, in agreement with my doctor, left my ovaries in. There are truly many factors to weigh in this decision. For me, it was my age, and the fact that I wanted the option to explore surrogacy down the road (which I did and it resulted in twin boys). But other considerations came into play as well such as the length of time I had been on birth control, family history, etc. You really need to weigh all options and consider what the ex post facto scenarios are as well in terms of HRT etc.
