Missed pills--could i be pregnant

Hi,
I have been taking Yasmine 28...I just started my 3rd month on July 11th. I used back up birth control the first 2 months as I forgot a couple of pills here and there and would just double up the next day. I am not sure in which weeks i missed pills. On July 3 and 4th I had unprotected sex. I had my period as usual during the last week of inactive pills and started my period on July 9th. Is there a chance I might still be pregnant if I missed pills before the unprotected sex but still had my period days later?
Please help!!!

Hi,
There is no safe time to have sex, unfortunately. Having unprotected sex 1 week before your period starts can still be a fertile period for you.

What you are reading about "most fertile time is 2 weeks before period starts" is just an AVERAGE, not a guarantee. Most women, most of the time, ovulate around the "day 14" of their cycle, which is about 2 weeks before their period.

However, you can be fertile for MUCH longer than this exact "day", as many women ovulate anywhere between "day 7" to "day 20". You may be perfectly regular in your cycle, but then ovulate at an "off" time for a few cycles for no apparent reason. Additionally, sperm can live inside our bodies for 3-5 days after intercourse, so the fertile window increases even more, as the sperm can be "waiting" for an egg to be released.

Women can ovulate at any time during their cycle. There is no guaranteed safe time to have unprotected sex.

I am happy to read that you will be using backup protection when you miss pills. I hope my information helps, and I'm happy to explain the fertile period in more depth if you are interested!

Hi Anon (July 15th, 20 year-old),

Are you making up the pills that you miss?

It is so important if you forget pills, that you use a condom for the next 7 days after your missed pills. Women can forget pills, and it is difficult to be 100% compliant when taking them consistently and correctly every single day. However, the concern is when women don't take pills PLUS choose not to use a back-up form of protection (condom) that can really increase your chances of pregnancy.

The pill is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy only when used consistently and correctly every time. I want you to be safe, and not worry about an unwanted pregnancy, so if you miss pills, the effectiveness rate of your pill significantly decreases. If you, in addition, do not use a condom, you are at a much higher risk for an unintended pregnancy.

I hope you are doing OK...you asked for my help, and I wanted to give you the best information so that you can not have this additional worry and stress in the future!
