My question is about hyperthyroid medication prior and during pregnancy

My wife is 8 weeks pregnant and prior to the pregancy she was taking methimazole since July 2014 5mg 3x p/day. She has been off it since April 30th 2015. The doctor says we are a high risk pregnancy and we are very worried. Is there a concern for the methimazole she was taking? What are some of things I should be concerned with ? Current medication Is PTU, is this ok for pregnancy? Thank you

Hi Anon

Thank you for your post! Congratulations on the baby!

PTU is a class D drug regarding pregnancy which means it is not considered to be safe but there are many drugs women need to take that have the same classification. Methimazole is also a class D but is considered even less safe in the first trimester. So if she has been off it since April 5 she should be ok.

During the second and third trimesters, methimazole is considered to be now safer than PTU.  This is all due to how the baby develops (the timing).

So, despite some risks, PTU is best for now and then switching over to methimazole when she is in her second trimester is often recommended. Your wife can talk with her doctor about her options.

I hope this makes sense, it's all a bit complicated.
