Q:

What happens if I miss one week of birth control pills? How long will it take for my body to adjust to the pill again?

Hello everyone,

I've been on Yasmin for about two years now, always took the pill on time. My question is this, I finished my period on Friday July 17th, on Sunday July 19th I was suppose to start a new pack of my active pill, however I was on vacation last week, and forgot my pills at home, and missed a whole week of my first week of active pills. When I got back, I started my first week of the pack on Sunday the 25th. I wanted to find out, will I be getting my period this coming up month, once I start taking the sugar pill? Will missing one week, and starting the new pack a week later mess up my body, and how long will it take for my body to adjust to the pill again? I'm not worried about getting pregnant, for I've been single for about two months, and not sexually active, I'm more worried about how long will it take for my body to get back on schedule with my periods and all. Thanks in advance for any inofmation you can share with me.

Hello Diane,

thank you so much for answering my question. I guess I'll just wait and see what happens, I've been on the pill for two years, and no problems with it, just some irregular spotting in the last couple of months, and my doctor said that can be due to me losing weight, body changing and all that good stuff! I'll just have to be patient and wait for my body to readjust!
Once again, thank you for you information.

You're sure welcome. I'll be interested in how it all turns out. Come back and update us sometime and let us know how long it took your body to get back to normal, OK?

And congrats on losing weight! That's awesome!

Hi, Banditka, and welcome to EmpowHer! Thanks so much for your question. It's a great one.

I have a question for you: Has your body on the pill been relatively trouble-free? Then most likely this won't be a huge deal either. But if you tend to have a few issues with the pill, it might take you longer to get back to being perfectly normal.

Our bodies are soooo different that honestly, the only way you'll know exactly how the week without pills is going to affect you is to wait and see. It might come right when you start the sugar pills, just like regular. It might be a week late. Or it might not come at all. (Sometimes I think birth control pills like to mess with us just to show us who's boss.)

Please call your doctor or gynecologist's office and ask to talk to the nurse, and ask the nurse what her or his advice is if you end up not getting a period during your next week of sugar pills. They will probably want you to go ahead and start your next pack of pills just as normal, but it's good to be sure.
