I have had many tests, scans, colonoscopy and endoscopy and noone has been able to find an answer to my problem. Nausea every day with dry heaves, have a hard time to eat, feel sick to stomach all the time. Possible MS, being treated for mixed connective tissue disease. Can't stand this discomfort any longer and wonder what to do about it!!

Hi TerryJean - I am an EmpowHER Guide, and have worked in the healthcare field for more than 20 years. Our focus on Empowher is to guide our readers and members to finding solutions to their health problems, by working with their own team of health care providers and by doing their own research, based on guidance and support from HerWriters and Guides. We also welcome comments from other readers who may have experience in the same health condition so that everyone can benefit from the experience of others.

We cannot and do not offer specific medical advice for individuals in terms of diagnosis, treatment or recommendations with regard to diagnostic tools.

Thank you for providing more information on the conditions you've been dealing with, the medical procedures and medical specialists. If I'm understanding your comments the stomach ache seems to be an isolated concern and you've had multiple diagnostic procedures that have not provided a clear cause and you were given a prescription to reduce stomach acid which is not providing relief.

You may find our reference page on acid reflux to be helpful:

It does not appear that anyone has suggested that food allergies or food intolerance could be causing your pain, so you may find the following article from the Mayo Clinic helpful:http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-allergy/AN01109

Since your primary care physician is monitoring your overall health you may want to schedule an appointment with him/her specifically to deal with the stomach concerns, and to aggressively pursue a solution. You've been dealing with this for more than a year with no clear results, and that's far too long. It would be helpful to provide your doctor a written summary of all of your tests, medications and results (or lack of them) so that he/she can review all of this at a glance, and review them as they may relate to your stomach issues. The manner in which regular appointments take place today does not really focus the physician's attention on one condition in depth, and by orchestrating that attention yourself you are more likely to get either an answer or a referral to a specialist who can help you further.

Please let me know if this information helps you, and what you decide to do next. I wish you all the best, and that you find relief. Pat

Hi Terryjean - I'm sorry to hear that you've been through so many tests, and have so much pain, and still don't have a clear diagnosis, let alone some kind of treatment program. It must get very frustrating for you at times and all of us get concerned when dealing with the unknown.

Do you have anyone in the mix of medical professionals that you're seeing who is looking at your situation as a whole, perhaps your primary care physician? It's not clear from what you've written whether there's a coordinated approach here or if you're on your own in seeing multiple specialists. Do you have anyone that you can talk to about what you're experiencing right now and your concerns? If not, you may want to see if your health plan includes counseling support as simply having an objective person to talk with can be very helpful while trying to deal with a health condition. You might also find some ideas in our reference page on anxiety, which is a normal state of tension and unease that's a natural and normal response to stress or uncertain situations.

Will you let us know what you think of these suggestions, and also keep us posted on your progress in getting a diagnosis? Take good care, Pat

Yes, I do have a primary care doctor. Are you responding to me as a nurse, or someone who has experienced these same problems? My stomach problems began in November 2008 when I went to a hospital emergency room with severe abdominal pain and nausea where they did x-rays to rule out appendicitis and/or gallbladder problems sending me home with a diagnosis of some type of viral problem. The nauseau and pain did not go away, I was sick after eating several different foods, and I went to my primary care physician who ordered a thorough abdominal ultra sound and a gallbladder test that took 1 1/2 hours to see how the gallbladder was actually working. I absolutely cannot put butter, beef or mayonaise type foods in my mouth!! I am so sick for days after eating these foods. These tests all came back normal. She sent me to a gastroenterologist in December who performed an endoscopy and colonoscopy after my initial consultation. I had lost 15 pounds in about a one month period. The only thing these tests revealed was slight inflammation at the gastroesophageal junction. They prescribed omeprazole. I continued to feel nauseaus, have dry heaves, some vomiting, lost another 35 pounds in six months, had no apetite and actually had to force myself to eat - all accompanied with stomach pain that was far worse in the morning after waking. I began taking an appetite stimulant and that did seem to work after a couple of weeks. I have stopped losing weight but I do make myself eat with very little appetite or hunger sensation. I have frequent urinary tract infections and am put on Cipro as treatment and while on this antibiotic I feel better with less stomach discomfort. I was diagnosed with probable MS in 2001 by a neurologist and a mixed connective tissue disease by a rheumatologist in 1992 - I receive ongoing treatment by both of these specialists but am seen by my primary care physician every six weeks for monitoring my overall health. I am however at the point of wondering what to do to resolve this stomach problem - I am getting discouraged with the situation. I am a strong individual and have never experienced any depression and/or anxiety problems, but I still need to fina a resolution to this problem (if one exists - and I have to believe one does exist) . I do want to find a treatment program and put this behind me.
