Two major valves control blood flow within the heart -- the tricuspid valve on the left side and the mitral value on the right. Conditions arise when either valve closes improperly due to birth defects, diseases, heart attack, alcohol abuse or medications. Prompt treatment may be recommended for some heart valve conditions while others are simply monitored.
