Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is made by the parathyroid glands, located on either side of thyroid which surrounds the "adam's apple" in the front of the throat. PTH is critical to calcium and phosphorus balance in the body and bones. Deficiency of parathormone results in abnormally low calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia). Excessive parathormone leads to elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) and calcium deposition in cartilage. PTH is also known as parathormone and parathyrin.
