What Is Up With All of the Crazy Abdominal Exercise Gadgets?

To give you a short background on fitdiva Jill and I, we have been friends for many years now. At one point we lived in the same city and use to run, bike and race together. On one of our many runs we were talking it up as usual and venting about all the misinformation out there regarding health, nutrition, exercise, etc.

It’s very hard for seasoned experts in the health and fitness field to see these things and not want to just scream. So, Jill and I created this website for that purpose and to basically set the story straight on exercise and nutrition. Watch out, here is my first vent or scream.

WHAT IS UP WITH ALL THE CRAZY ABDOMINAL EXERCISE GADGETS? If I’m flipping the channels on the television, low and behold there is the infomercial on the latest and greatest thingamabob to give you that six pack. I’m here to tell you, you don’t need it. It’s called the floor and your body. That’s all you need. I guarantee you I can give you several exercises that can strengthen your whole core area just as efficiently if not better without spending four payments of $49.99. Matter of fact, one of them just happens to be the exercise of the week and there are many more. The next few weeks I’m going to dedicate the exercise of the week to core strengthening exercises so be sure to check them out. Please don’t waste your money and just stayed tuned to thefitdivas.

Unfortunately most of the abdominal devices out there only target your actual abdominals and the core is made up of much more. The core makes up everything from our shoulders to our groin front and back. This includes our pelvis, abdominals, obliques, and the upper (cervical) middle (thoracic) and lower (lumbar) area of our spine. Our core is the center of everything we do. It gets us out of bed, helps us lift our children and even kick a ball. It offers stability, flexibility and balance in our everyday tasks. So, it’s pretty darn important. Many of the professional and collegiate athletes I work with focus on a strong core. If you’re a pitcher on a baseball team, your throw comes more from your core then from your arm. It is your powerhouse!

Please beware of those gadgets because the best exercises require no equipment at all. Most people purchase these gadgets do so for motivation. It’s the whole “if I spend the money I’ll use it” concept or because they want to look like the hot guy or gal demonstrating the machine. Believe me those demonstrator are doing much more then just that machine. They are on a whole strict diet and exercise program, I guarantee it. You need to find the motivation within to work that area without spending the money and having some machine sitting there begging you to use it.

I will never forget a few years back when I pulled up to my sister’s house and there was the big empty box sitting by the curb waiting for the garbage man. It had a catchy name like “power pack abs,” or something. I walked into her house, pointed at the box and basically asked what was up with that? It’s hard having me as a sister because my family likes to try the latest diet trend or exercise regime and usually they do it without me knowing because they don’t want to hear what I have to say. Anyway, surprise, surprise, a few weeks later it was the latest clothes drying device and then not long after that it too was waiting for the garbage man along the side of the curb.

Congratulations on your story. Well done and very informative. You are so right when you talk about these devices ending up being the "clothes drying" device.

I love how they say, "money back guarantee" too. If you look at the percentage of people who will actually box the machine up and send it back...The percentage is small. Who has time to find the right box, take it to the post office and mail the contraption back?? Not alone pay for the cost of sending it back. Not too many of us. That's why the money back guarantee is so popular and draws you in. They are smart enough to know the percentages are so low of people returning them. Plus, I think people feel shameful and don't want to admit they made a mistake or they didn't use it. And in many cases it's probably not a stand alone anyway. You need more than an ab machine to help you. If you're looking to get into good shape.

Buyer beware. If you want nice abs and are looking to build core strength, get to the gym. Or, start out slow with walking...it's free and a great first start at exercising. Get yourself committed emotionally first. Then you can decide whether a device is really going to do the trick or not. I say, NOT. But, then again, that comes from my own personal experiences. I've been sucked in one to many times.

Best in health,
Michelle
