VIDEO: Dr. Russell - BMI Standards, Have They Changed?

June 12, 2009 - 6:36pm 425 reads 0 comments

Dr. Russell explains if the Body Mass Index standards have changed throughout the years.

Dr. Russell:
The standards are not being changed. The standards are well established at a BMI of 30. What people are proposing is that, as the population gets larger that we redefine or raise the bar, if you will. So where a BMI of 30 now defines obesity, some people may propose where you raise the bar to 35 to define obesity, and everything else beneath that will then become overweight and then normal.

About Dr. Russell, M.D.:
Dr. George V. Russell, M.D., earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Denison University in 1988 and his M.D. at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992.
