In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Health Expert", Dr. Suzanne Levine discusses cutting edge technology available to women to help treat pain in their feet.

EmpowHER: A simple walk shouldn’t hurt, but if you feel pain in you big toe, heel, or arch, you need help.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: The feet are the most abused part of the body. We don’t think about our feet until they actually hurt.

EmpowHER: Podiatric Surgeon Doctor Suzanne Levine should know. She has performed more than 28-Thousand foot surgeries and has come up with some non-surgical ways to treat your aching feet…This is an infrared machine, I-R for short. It uses infrared heat to increase blood circulation.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: We apply it to areas such as planter facitis, neromas, bursitis, tendonitis, what it does is it diminishes the inflammation, it’s almost better than ice and we have used it on a lot of athletes.

EmpowHER: Dr. Levine calls the result nothing short of amazing.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: Low and behold after one treatment, the pain was diminished by fifty percent, after three treatments, patients virtually had no pain.

EmpowHER: The bad news-IR Treatments ARE expensive and not covered by insurance…So Doctor Levine has come up with some less expensive ways to treat foot pain. Beginning with a common problem for many women – pain in the ball of the foot.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: Women in their forties, particularly menopausal women, who have worn heels, they work as secretaries or attorneys, they have to wear shoes which are some what fashionable, they have lost cushioning under the ball of the foot. As you age and lose fat under the skin on your face, the same thing happens with the ball of your foot.

EmpowHER: Dr. Levine says injections of FDA approved poly lactid acid can help.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: It cushions the ball of the foot and it will remain anywhere from nine months to a year.

EmpowHER: Each syringe is priced at $50. If you are looking for a more affordable and less invasive option-you can also try Doctor Levine’s “Pillows For Your Feet” Pad, a cushion you can place inside your shoe or, “Pillows For Your Feet” Solution.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: It doesn’t cause any harm but what it does is numb your foot for two hours. If I have two hours of dancing, or I know I will be on my feet for two hours, and I will be pain free, I am happy. This product is cutting edge.

EmpowHER: Another common problem, especially for athletes, is pain in the big toe.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: I’ve developed, it’s called hydronic acid, Suprax, that is being used now in big university hospitals for the hip joint, for the knee joint, the ankle joint. I started using it for the big toe joint.

EmpowHER: Doctor Levine Says the injections expand and lubricate the toe joint.

Dr. Suzanne Levine: Now all of a sudden the person can move their big toe up and down and they go, it’s a miracle! The miracle doesn’t last that long, you may need one or two injections, but it will prolong the surgery and I say, anything that prolongs surgery that doesn’t put you out and until something better comes along, I think this is an amazing treatment.

EmpowHER: And another option for pain free feet.
