Our digestive systems are the fuel center of our bodies. When the digestive system is functioning optimally then we are less likely to experience acute or chronic illness and disease. During my naturopatbic education I was constantly told that you must treat the digestive system first before you can successfully treat any other disease. I listened and learned the processes of what to look for digestive imbalances for people as well as other system imbalances. Once I started my own practice I worked with people with all different types of ailments sometimes I would treat the digestive system and some times I would not depending on what symptoms they came in with. I noticed that more I included one of our health objectives as treating the digestive system the better my patients got quicker and stayed that way for a longer period of time. The reason is simple the digestive system touches so many other important processes that it has to be part of every treatment plan.
Our digestive system starts in our mouth and how we breakdown our food. If we do not chew our food enough we will not get the nutrients out of our food or we can have digestive problems and pain or indigestion. I recommend chewing your food 25 times before swallowing this helps us digest properly and will actually make us feel full more quickly – this reduces over eating which can lead to being over weight and increase risks of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Food moves through our mouth down the esophagus and into the stomach if you have decreased stomach acid you can have nutrient deficiency or heartburn pain. It then moves through the stomach and into the small intestine to absorb our nutrient and release fuel into the body.
If we eat highly processed or junk food then we throw off our blood sugar balance and cause insomnia, fatigue, weight gain, diabetes, adrenal fatigue and excess amounts of cortisol running through our bodies. Overly rich and fatty foods can cause pain and gallbladder problems.
