The Sport of Kissing

It is that time of the year again. For many, New Year’s Eve is a night of celebration, the beginning of something new, and the search for a New Year’s kiss.

Maybe you already know who you want to kiss or maybe part of your New Year’s plan is to not kiss anyone. But I was a single girl once and know that for many single girls, the search for the kiss can be just as fun as the kiss itself.

No matter how old I get or how many years I have been married, I never get tired of kissing my husband on New Year’s Eve. Even in the years of caring for sick kids or retiring from exhausted days, I make an effort to stay awake until that magical minute and look forward to the kiss that says, “I loved you all year and am excited to start a new year together.”

Even if you do not have a significant other, New Year’s Eve can be that exciting time where you hope to find a person to share that special moment with at midnight. It can just be a celebration of the new and that is something exciting. The partner you have been with many years, the person with potential, or a stranger in the crowd, unfamiliar and tempting.

The single girl, all dressed up and out with her friends. Waiting in the cold winter air in a line for the current hot spot in town. She shivers in her too expensive heels as she waits patiently to get inside where the lights are glowing and the music is loud.

Finally, the heat blows over her like a blanket as she steps inside the popular club. There are friends and strangers all around. She laughs as she drinks champagne out of plastic party flutes and dances in a shimmering dress. She scans the crowd to find the one she wants to kiss.

She and her friends are all on the same mission. They are in search of their New Year’s kiss.

As the hands of the clock move closer to the midnight hour, it looks as if she will chant Happy New Year with the rest of the crowd and quickly take another sip of champagne from her glass instead.

An unfulfilled New Year’s kiss is nothing to ruin an evening over. The music is still good and her friends are all around. She is already happy.
