Yes, it is completely normal to have an irregular period and/or breakthrough bleeding for a month or two after using Plan B.

I had unprotected sex on 4/28. Took Next Choice on 4/30. On 5/3 we had unprotected sex again.. (I know, stupid). Then on 5/5 I started bleeding, which lasted for about 3 days. I am wondering if I should be worried because I had unprotected sex again, without taking an EC. My body has been acting really weird, which again, I'm blaming on the EC, but... Just wondering if the EC taken on 4/30 can still protect me for what happened on the 3rd. Thanks!

Hi,
Yes, anytime you have unprotected sex, you are at risk for pregnancy. It is very, very important to know: taking Emergency Contraception does NOT protect you from future unprotected sex. So, when you had unprotected sex again, this is a separate incident that could result in a pregnancy. Please read the information provided with your EC, as it very clearly explains that taking this will not protect against future intercourse, and is only an added protection (up to 80%, I believe) for sex that happened before you took EC.

Using protection (pill, ring, condom, etc) are your best options for preventing pregnancy, and when used consistently and correctly, are between 98-99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Those are much better odds than taking EC! Let us know if you'd like us to talk about your birth control options.

In the meantime, your period may be early or late after taking EC, or you may experience breakthrough bleeding.

I usually have my periods on the 27th of every month. They are very regular and last for 5 days. Last month, I took a pill to delay my period as I was meeting my boy friend after a long long time. We had sex, but we were careful about the protection and he did not come inside me. I got my periods on the 4th of March, 5 days after we'd had sex. This is April 6th now and I still haven't had my period. Is there a chance I could be pregnant?

Hi, Anon,

You did everything right after the condom tore. You took Plan B 12 hours later and you had the period it sometimes brings. That, and the fact that you had a negative pregnancy test, is all good news.

Also, it's pretty uncommon to get pregnant during your period.

Don't be too anxious if your period does not come on time. One of the most common side effects with Plan B is irregularity in menstrual cycle for the next month or two. OK? Just realize you did everything right, the test was negative, and this is just a side effect.
