My bf and I had unprotected sex right atfer I just ended my period I took plan B pills and the next day I got my period again even though I just had it 3 days earlier. But now I still haven't gotten my period. Is it possible that I'm just late?

Can anyone please help me? I'm thinking I'm just going to get my period really late. Or is it possible that I am pregnant? Answers asap please.

That is a good question!

I'll give you the "long version" answer, since you sound knowledgeable and curious.

Plan B's side effects do include "irregular cycles" as you know, and many women interpret that as just their periods being "off"...but the reason you have a period is because you have ovulated (for most women), the egg was not fertilized, and the lining of your uterus that was building up for implantation is no longer needed and sheds.

This means that yes, Plan B can slightly alter your cycle, which does include ovulation. The hormones in Plan B are the same that are in other hormonal contraceptives (the pill, the ring, etc), but is like a "mega dose" of hormones. These hormones work in several ways: changing the lining of the uterus to be less "inviting" for a fertilized egg, prevents an egg from being released (ovulation), changing cervical mucus so that sperm have a more difficult time entering. All of these are the reasons that Plan B (and other hormonal contraceptives) are so effective, and also are the reason that women do not know when they ovulate if they are not consistent with their pills (or, if you take Plan B, which is designed for just emergency situations).

With all that said, if you did conceive on June 18th, then it would be too early to test accurately now (June 24th). You would need to wait at least 10-14 days for a test to be accurate, as it takes this long for the process of ovulation through implantation to occur.

Please let us know if your period does begin in June, or if you decide to take a pregnancy test next week. We'll be thinking about you!

Thanks! I already decided not to worry about it and just test if I dont get my period by early July. Could be a skipped period which is normal just not normal for me.

Hi anonymous,

If you are searching for a clear cut yes/no answer, yes, everytime you have sex, there is a possibility of pregnancy. I think the explanations provided by Allison above should reassure you that your probably not pregnant.

Keep us updated.

When are you expecting your next period? If it was at the end of May, it is likely not even considered a "late period" yet. A pregnancy test would not be effective until you have missed a period.

Please read the information that came with the Plan B, as it does say that one of the side effects is spotting, breakthrough bleeding, irregular periods (earlier or later than usual; heavier or lighter). It is not harmful, and just your body's reaction to the dose of hormones in Plan B.

You will need to wait until the end of June to either have your period or take a pregnancy test. I am so sorry you are worried, but there is that risk of pregnancy whenever you have unprotected sex. The chance of you ovulating that close to your period is low, but it can still happen. It is GREAT that you took Plan B, and I hope you also will look into more effective forms of birth control (the pill, condom, etc)...we are happy to talk with you about all of your options! (When you are ready; I know right now you are scared that you are pregnant).

If your period does not start by the end of June, take another pregnancy test. It is most likely that you are not pregnant since he did not ejaculate, so try not to worry!

How did you have intercourse with a tampon in??

We just did it didnt effect anything but i dont know it was both of our first time and we didnt really know what we were doing as stupid as that sounds and i dont need any kinda birth control cause we wont do it again till we are married

That does not sound stupid at all! I was just wondering, because it sounds like it would hurt quite a bit to have a tampon inside during sex.

Can you at least keep a few condoms nearby (and, have your boyfriend do so as well?). I can't tell you the number of times college students would tell me that they "weren't going to do it again" and "wait until they are married", but then the heat of the moment gets to them, and they are unprepared (no condoms). When you are in the heat of the moment, it is easy to rationalize "if we do it while I'm on my period, I won't get pregnant" or "if we just stick it in, stick it out, it won't count"...that kind of thinking can cause quite a bit of worry and stress for the next few weeks. We would love to prevent this stress and worry, and since you are sexually active (meaning: engaging in sexual behaviors, not only intercourse), it is such a good idea just to have a condom in your room/apartment/dorm. If you never use it, GREAT! If you need it..at least it's there.

Take care!

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question! Every woman is different and you should expect to have a period within a month after taking Plan B. You shouldn't worry that you have not had a period after 3 days. For more information about what to expect after you take Plan B, click here http://ec.princeton.edu/questions/ecmenses.html. I hope this helps!

I have a question about plan b side effects... I have taken the pill 2 weeks in my menstrual cycle eventho I wasnt fertile when my bf and I got intimate. He withdrew but i know that's only 80% effective. My question is after taking the pill i was tired and slept the whole day then I keep getting cramps and lower back pain that comes and goes as if i m getting my period.. I didnt spot or had any for of bleeding.. This is my 3rd day after taking the pill...does that mean i might be pregnant since almost everyone keeps saying they bleed some kind of for or is it normal not to bleed until u get an early period or late one??? i m confused
