I had unprotected sex on sept 18 and on sept 19 i took the plan b pill i and i spotted lightly 10 days after I was suppose to get a period around the 14th or 15th of october but i didnt get no period. I went to the doctor on oct 23rd for a pap smear and also a preggo test which came bacc negative. The doctor also erthing looks fine and it could be the pill that has thrown my normal cycle off. Since the 23rd i have taken 4 preggo test which have also came negative..It is Nove 22 and i have yet to see a period is this normal because i am freaking out/

Yes, this is normal...please do stop worrying and taking so many home pregnancy tests! You are OK!

Assuming you have ONLY had unprotected sex on the dates you mentioned (Sept 18th & 19th), have taken Plan B, gone to the doctor, had a pregnancy test there, and have taken a half-dozen other home pregnancy tests...you are NOT pregnant! Please stop worrying.

Plan B is like a mega-dose of hormonal contraceptives, and can "throw off" your cycle, as well as cause "breakthrough bleeding" (bleeding in-between your periods). This is OK and normal. Your doctor said everything looks fine, but you are still worried. Why? I hope you are able to use this excessive worry and stress to some good, and use it as a motivator to choose to have protected sex next time (condom or pill), because this seems really emotionally draining for you--I'm sorry you are so worried.

Some women can have a late period, or even miss a period, and this is OK. You have been to the doctor, so please trust in your medical evaluation, enjoy the next month worry-free, use protection, and mark on your calendar the date you expect your next period (late December, I assume). Give yourself permission to not think about your period until the date on the calendar.

Did your doctor talk with you about your birth control options, so that you can be more confident in knowing that you had protected sex by using the pill (99% effective at preventing pregnancy, but have to use every day for this effectiveness rate), or a condom (up to 98% effective). There are many, many other options as well, and we are happy to discuss them with you.

Lol, This is not a gynecologist, just my family doctor and sadly it is a 3-5 week wait whenever I call for an appointment. I have called in the past for one of my children who had an ear infection and they said they couldnt fit him in for a week and a half so we ended up at the emergency. I don't have a gynecologist so perhaps it is time to get one.

Thanks again!

Definitely! And, a Pediatrician, too! Wow...5 weeks for an ear infection; can't imagine.

Let us know if you'd like any help finding a Gyn or Pediatrician (just give us your physical location), but the best way is to ask trusted family and friends.

good luck!

Hi There,

I am having a situation also after taking Plan B. I had my period Sept 17/09, my husband and I had sex on the 22nd and the condom broke. We already have 3 kids and he had just had a vasectomy two weeks prior however the first time we had sex after that so I took the Plan B two hours after this happened. I then got my period on Sept 28th that lasted 7 days, then again on October 9th that lasted 7 days and just got it again on October 20th and am now on day 3. I am not worried about being pregnant but I am really annoyed with having my period for 7 days then goes away for 10 days then come back for 7 days then goes away for another 10 then comes back......You would think that with having it so often it would be light however I am having to wear a tampon and a pad and it seems clotty which is not how it is usually! Could this be a side affect from the Plan B or should I seek my doctor on this one?

Thanks!

That does sound annoying, but could definitely be the side effect from Plan B (the "early" period on Sept 28th, that is). Your cycle may be a little "skewed" for this month, and that is OK. If you continue having periods that are fewer than 25 days apart, it would be a good idea to call your gynecologist.

It sounds like you took Plan B just as it was intended....for those mistakes or accidents, even when you were prepared (vasectomy and condom...can't be much more prepared than that!) :)

One more thing---Plan B should not be causing blood clots during your period, but some women do have heavy bleeding that contains clots, and is normal. If the clots are numerous and the bleeding is excessive (soaking more than 1-2 pads or tampons every hour), then you would want to call your doctor.

Does this help?

Thank you, this does help! I have been going through tampons this time about every hour and having to use a tampon and a pad at night. I called my family doctor today and they cant see me before November 24th if you can believe that! I think it is time to find a new family doctor!

I'm glad you called! Is this family doctor a gynecologist? If so, then the non-urgent appointment (4 weeks from now) indicates that this may not something to be concerned about, and could resolve on its own. They probably want you to have another 4 weeks to see if you have a period or not that includes more regular bleeding. (assuming you spoke with a nurse, and not just the receptionist)?

I took plan b the day after I had protected sex, then experienced some bleeding about 5 days later for only 3 days - it was heavier than spotting, but lighter than a period. Since I bled, was that my period? and does that mean I'm not pregnant?

Plan B can "trigger" a period to start early, and it may be lighter or heavier than your regular periods...this is all normal. (Plan B can also delay a period; it is basically just a "mega dose" of the same hormones in the pill, and can have a different effect on different women).

To answer your question directly: it depends and there is no clear cut answer from what I've researched (re: if your bleeding after Plan B means you are definitely "not pregnant"). My educated-guess is: if everyone woman who bleeds after Plan B is definitely not pregnant, then we would all know this information (and be screaming it from the roof-tops!).

So, the more likely answer is: it depends, and can not be used as an indicator of pregnant or not pregnant. A women who is having a regular menstrual period (meaning, she is also not using any hormonal contraceptives) is known not to be pregnant, as menstrual bleeding originates in the uterus, where the uterine lining is shed. A viable pregnancy would include a fertilized egg implanted in the uterine lining, and thus, it is not possible for the uterine lining to be shed while having an implanted fertilized egg in-tact.

The caveat is: bleeding can be occurring from elsewhere in the body (vagina or cervix, for example), and this can be mistaken for a menstrual period (from the uterus).

We have received this question numerous times, and I will ask one of our medical experts if they can provide any more information or insight as to what happens to a woman's body (including the hormones, bleeding, and how to know if you are/are not pregnant if your bleeding is irregular...and may/may not be a menstrual period) after taking Plan B.

Thanks for your question, and we will hopefully post a response from a medical expert soon.
