Janice Taylor, "Our Lady of Weight Loss," shares her tips on how to be assertive rather than aggressive in achieving weight loss goals.

Janice:
Well, just get what you want. It’s okay and if you’re out going to a restaurant, they want you to come back. You can order off the menu. You don’t have to say, “Gee, I see this on menu. You know, you have fish, could you broil it for me?” Could you put it on a bed of lettuce, make a bigger salad”? You really can ask for what you want.

Someone asked me today what would I do if they go to a friend’s house and the friend’s very thin, so there’s a sabotage question. Is it intentional, and they have dessert and she always makes this, my friend take the cake home with her. She will make you take the cake home. So I said, just, “Give it away; throw it out,” or say, “No, thank you,” or hold your ground.

She said, “But I don’t feel like, I don’t want to insult her. I don’t want her to be upset.” You know, all these…women very much worry about other people’s feelings. I guess men do too, but the people who I speak to are primarily women, and they are so concerned about the other person, and in the meantime it’s really okay to take care of yourself. Take care of yourself first, especially around food. You don’t have to have that cake. You can say "No, thank you."
