Hi, I have a question and concern and I want to know if you think I'm handling the situation the right way. I had blood test done for IgM and I was told it was high and only one of my doctor understood the meaning of this and told me it means you have infection. No other doctor of mine are understanding this except for this doctor of mine and there is no one to help me to solve this infection problem. I don't feel good like this at all and I have severe nausea and no appetite. It's been awhile I have this issue. I was told such infection of mine is from an autoimmune problem because I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I want to know because of having infection and feeling like this does it sound right if I go to the emergency room for them to help me to solve this infection problem I have? I'm sure they would do blood work but what I don't understand is will they be able to find out what bacteria is causing me the infection? I was told such infection I have it is highly possible to be mycoplasma infection. I don't feel so good like this and I want to know and be sure if I go to the emergency room explaining this issue I have would they be able to help me for this matter? Please let me know soon.
Thanks,
Melissa

Hello Melissa6666,

Thank you for coming to us for advice.

This is not a problem that requires you to go to the emergency room. Please do not go.

An immunoglobulins test is done to measure the level of immunoglobulins, also known as antibodies, in your blood.

Antibodies are specific to each type of foreign substance.

IgM antibodies are the largest antibody. They are found in blood and lymph fluid and are the first type of antibody made in response to an infection. They also cause other immune system cells to destroy foreign substances. IgM antibodies are about 5% to 10% of all the antibodies in the body.

The test is ordered when a person has symptoms of an immunoglobulin deficiency such as recurrent infections, especially of the respiratory tract (sinus, lungs) or gastrointestinal tract (stomach, intestines), and/or chronic diarrhea.

Immunoglobulins testing may also be ordered when a person has signs of chronic inflammation or chronic infection and when a health practitioner suspects excess or abnormal immunoglobulin production.

I urge you to schedule an appointment to talk with the physician who ordered the test and told you that the high levels of IgM indicate an infection. This doctor understands what it indicates and can best explain why your level is high, what is the cause, and can recommend any further testing and treatment options, if necessary.

Regards,
Maryann

Thanks for your reply. The problem is my endocrinologist doesn't know anything about IgM and a different doctor of mine told me that I have infection no one else understands my issue. I feel in between like this and there is no one to understand or help me. I keep thinking I should just go to emergency room because of this I can't really tolerate it. I want to know if you think it makes Sense that I go? Please let me know. Thanks,
Melissa

Hello Melissa,

No, you should not go to the ER. This is not an emergency. It is something that any internist or medical doctor can deal with in an office and most certainly, a gastroenterologist would have knowledge of what antibodies are.

Thanks for your reply. The problem is my doctors especially my GI doctor don't care to understand my issue. My endocrinologist didn't just order IgM blood work a different doctor of mine mentioned this to me about IgM and I asked the doctor and nurse to include it in the blood work I was having done which they did it for me. When results came out for my IgM it's showing that it's high. They didn't understand any of these. The doctor who told me about IgM he understand what this is and told me since mine is high it means I have infection. I also keep getting a pounding and palpitating feeling right on where my thyroid is located and I was told the infection I have is affecting my thyroid because I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This doctor of mine who told me about this said I shouldn't ignore this and have it taken care of and I really don't have anyone to help me for this. I feel sick in my stomach, I have no appetite and I'm constantly having nausea. At night time I keep getting this pounding palpitating feeling right on where my thyroid is located and I get this feeling for like 5 minutes which really scares me and I can't sleep because of this. After this pounding feeling I keep getting blurry vision. This really scares me to.
From how I feel it's emergency for me because I can't really take it and I can't eat anything or do anything and I can't sleep. I don't have anyone to help me because of my infection problem. I was told I should find out what bacteria is causing my infection and I really don't have anyone to help me for this. This bothers me to. Does it still make any sense if I go to the emergency room? Please let me know soon.
Thanks,
Melissa
