How can I combat post-gallbladder-removal belly fat and weight gain during menopause?

Hello, in October 2008 I was well into menopause but had no real issues with belly fat or overall weight gain. Then I had my gallbladder removed due to painful attacks of my common bile duct, as well as gallstones. I am appalled at the weight I have gained since the surgical procedure. In fact it is so upsetting (none of my clothes fit) that I feel at times clinically depressed. I've never had to fight weight gain before. Now I have an "unsupportive spine" as well, and must take occasional bouts of oral steroids to control the inflammation. I also have had two spinal epidural steroid injections, and wonder if these injections could cause me to gain weight. Any comments would be most welcome. Thank you!

I had gall bladder surgery in 1991. I weighed between 105 and 110 my entire life - I am 5'2'' female and had five children. I never had a weight problem ever in my life.

Once the surgery was over and things settled down (approx. 6 weeks) the weight gain began. I gained 30 lbs in 1 year and no matter how hard I try with diet or exercise - and believe me, I do try - the extra weight won't budge. I am 60 yrs. old now and still active and I eat low carb and healthy with lost of veggies and fruits - I do not drink soda.

I have always eaten a healthy diet and am not a carboholic and rarely if ever eat sweets. I have maintained my present weight for 20 years - and am NOT happy at my present weight even though most people don't think I am 'THAT' heavy - but to me - I AM HEAVY.

Don't believe ANYONE who tells you there will NOT be weight gain after gall bladder surgery. I don't know anyone who has had this surgery who has not or is not battling their weight and most without success. :0(

I did some reasearch today on Celiac Disease today and boy does it sound like that's what I could have. I read that a gluten free diet helps with that. I'm going to start to buy gluten free items to see if it helps. I have a friend who claims she lost 50 lbs from switching to a gluten free diet. She too has been suffering since her gallbladder was removed. I'm going to switch to soy milk, white bread instead of wheat, and I'll buy gluten free snacks from now on. I really hope this helps!

Hi back. There are some good posts in lifeaftergallbladder.com and help at liverdoctor.com . Do look at gallbladderatack.com. The fatigue and rapid decline in finesses is common. Something is taking out body’s ability to retain fitness. And it affects lung capacity for some reason? It would seem those whose lifes consisted of heath and fitness (cardio exercise) before procedure have more problems than most post. I believe it’s because the liver is conditioned to working harder for sporty than the none sporty people. Post procedure, continual bile flow with no reserve is to root problem for sporty people

There is a honey moon period before problems kick in some last only 3 weeks, some years. Most with in 9 months.

There are law suits in progress against Surgeons for carrying out unnecessary procedures on people with no justified complications.
Surgeons definition of Diseased Gallbladders is a gallbladder that contains a stone. This is wronge, G Stones are ok and can be dissolved natural as just as fast as the can be produced. Very dishonest don’t you think.

I have searched for 4 years for answers - there are none for me - ex endurance cyclist. But, I can flush out the build up and remove the reflux after 6 weeks of cycling. I feel completely free of all symptoms including Irritable bowel. Unfortunately this only lasts as long as I am riding daily. To feel normal is wonderful. But unfortunately cannot last. Worth the expense of living on a credit card.
Take care - spread the word - GB surgery is a lie, a con and will murder your heath and more

Oh – Celica disease is suspected symptom of post gallbladder surgery complications PCS

Hi all. I had my gall bladder take from me almost 5 years ago. I was deliberately and skilfully lied to by a surgeon (committing medical fraud) in order to obtain my consent for his recommended procedure, who under a medical review lied as well. Advising weight gain, Reflux, Stomach pains, bloating, tiredness were not post procedure complications of gall bladder surgery. Since then he has gone on to performed thousands of procedures making millions of dollars, advising patents they can live normal lives with no heath problems. Before the procedure I was a heath and fitness freak. My body has simply folded under the weight gain pressure and is on the way out again for 3rd time. I developed a single stone and had niggles on the side after doing intensive cardio gym sessions on a spin bike, I was told by the surgeon there was no other option but to have the entire gall bladder taken out. I later found out that 40-80 % of stones could be removed via dissolving treatment as recommended by American College of Gastroenterology. In a nut shell Gallbladder Surgery is the biggest medical fraud in operation. Surgeons know full well what they are prescribing is a heath death sentence for up to 40%. I have personally found the following through trials and errors - Exercise makes the liver work harder and accelerates problems. No exercise results in constipation kick off daily exercise and movements return back to frequent and lose. Working seated all day accelerates the decline, bloating and weight gain. I have found a cure to removing the weight gain and all Post Cholecysteomy Syndrome complication, slowing the build up. It involves massive extreme cardio 7 days a week for two months straight. I would cycle daily up and down the Swiss, French and Italian Alps, 100 to 190Km per day. All Post Cholecysteomy Syndrome complications backed out of my body ( Reflux, Irritable Bowl syndrome, Bloating, weight gain, difficulty swallowing food, Stool formed normal) When returning to normal life and job behind the desk, my body would shut down, weight packs on , body explodes etc and within 6 months back to where I started. Literally watching your body dying before your eyes is sole destroying. I have flush out my body twice, last time I did no return to a desk job and kept cycling. My health stayed normal for 6 months until I as forced to take work to provide food on the table. I have lasted less than 5 months this time. I am weak, tired, bloated, cannot eat full means. I am over the fight for survival, over the lonely 6-8 hour cycle rides to rid the body of build up. I surrender and plan to take my life shortly. I have lost all, my job, carrier, ability to support and build a family, my life goals destroyed. Please tell every one about this dishonest con killing people’s heath. Don’t just stand for it call what this real problem is – systematic fraudulent destruction of human life, this procedure a crime against humanity – our bodies are a gift from God, to be cheeriest and used for good. To be taken out like this is pure evil...

I too beleive that my gallbladder was removed when it should not have been. My Hida Scan came back normal and my ultrasound did not show any stones. The pain in my right side would not go away. It lasted for 3 weeks and it was terrible so the surgon said we should remove it. After the surgery he said my gallbladder was diseased. But who really knows? Maybe my pain was caused by something else.

I too am weak and tired almost all the time. I used to be able to live a full energetic life. I would workout for an hour and a half each day and always want to go out. Now all I want to do is lie on the couch. Last weekend my fiance and I went to Pittsburgh to visit friends and we were on the go the entire time. I had so much trouble keeping up. When we were walking I was lagging behind, and when they went out at night to see a band, I went back to the hotel and got in bed.

I am only 31 years old and I know I should not feel this way! I can't wait to be a mother but I am scared I won't have the energy to be a successful mother.

Oh and I too have bad acid reflux. Last night the burning in my throat was so bad it made me vomit.

Even though I do not know you, I urge you not to take you life. It will get better for you and for all of us. I strongly believe it will; some how, some way!

PS- I don't understand how my best friend and mother have not had any problems since their gallbladder was removed. Why do symptoms only affects some people and not others?! It makes no sense.

I had my gb out 1 year and a half ago and have gained a HUGE amount of weight ONLY in my lower belly. I eat 1,000 HEALTHY calories a day and burn 400 at the gym- for 2 MONTHS NOW- and have lost hardly any weight. Even if I eat a SALAD with no dressing my stomache bloats up. It's disgusting and no one EVER warned me about it. I would like to tell anyone reading to be prepared!!! Keep your gall bladder if at all possible!!! Cannot even believe there is NO solution except for ONE website's "weight gain after cholecystectomy kit" which is hecka expensive but I'm going to try since i don't wanna be fat the rest of my life :(

Hello, I am a bit confused and wonder if I am answering 2 people with 2 sets of issues, one of whom has constipation, the other of whom has tried Jarrow's Bile Salts which resulted in diarrhea. I can only tell you that the bile salts have helped me, as well as probiotic acidophilus. I buy all of these supplements on Amazon.com. So sorry they have not worked for you, but sometimes we need to give things a chance, more than 5 days. I have experienced diarrhea too, but I prefer it to constipation, and over time my body has adjusted to the supplements. I've discussed these symptoms with doctors and am frozen out, they just will not admit that these after-effects exist. It's terribly frustrating, but I am not one to give up. I'm not an expert on weight loss programs as I've never before had to watch my food intake. My metabolism has completely changed since the surgery. I'm still "me" inside, but someone I don't recognize on the outside. I wish you well, and hope that you'll try the bile supplements again and give them a little time. I have managed to lose 12 pounds, only to gain it back when I ran out of bile salts. I won't allow that to happen again. Acidophilus helps with bloating, it really has flattened my tummy in just a matter of a few days. Do all the research and reading you can, and don't give up!

Thank you so much. I just called my gi doctor on Friday and I'm waiting for a script for Questran. I heard this works very well with the diarrhea and helps to absorb the fat. I can't take the diarrhea and the bad stomach cramping anymore! I could give Jarrows another chance but those 5 days were hell. My stomach pains and diarrhea were so bad! I was actually crying on the last morning. I called my local pharamasist and he told me to stop taking them. I do take a probiotic. It's called PB8 by Nutrition Now. It's the one sold at Whole Foods. I wonder if I should try a different probiotic and bile salt? I really want to feel better and loose weight!
