Dr. Cannada:
When it starts hurting it’s too long and for everyone how, it could depend on the surface they are on. For example, we are right here at the convention center and the floor is very hard concrete below us. So a woman is going to have much less tolerance for standing on heels than if she was at a well-padded, working in a carpeted room with really good padding underneath and would stand up and sit down a lot.

The long-term risk factors are dependent upon the shoe design but most of the high heels have very pointed toes so that could lead to bunions and other problems with your foot that may require, ultimately if they are that bad, surgical intervention.

About Dr. Cannada, M.D.:
Dr. Lisa K. Cannada, M.D., is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon with an extensive background in teaching and orthopaedic trauma surgery. She completed her medical school at University of Maryland in 1996 and entered her residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland. She came back to Maryland for her trauma fellowship at the RA Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Maryland.

She worked at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for three years before accepting a position at the University of Texas-Southwestern. She truly loves her career as an orthopaedic trauma surgeon and is a strong advocate for Women in Orthopaedic Surgery.
