Dr. Emdur:
Cortisol is an extremely important hormone. It is part of our flight and fight mechanism. It helps us fight infection. It helps us with wound healing. It helps balancing our blood sugars from a day-to-day level and, you know, you really can’t survive without your cortisol level.
If you go back ten thousand years ago when you were on the plane, an Indian on the planes of America and you were about to go through a period of starvation that’s the cortisol levels would rise and that would be signal for your body to start storing everything that you eat in fat so you could survive the period of famine.
You know, you advanced ten thousand years forward and now everybody’s cortisol levels are high since we have problems with our relationships, we can’t pay our mortgages, we have all this food available, and what happens, all this, everything we eat goes as extra fat in our mid-section into our arteries and is very deleterious to our health.
