I'm Dr. Connie Mariano, Chief Clinical Officer with EmpowHER, with what you can do during pregnancy.

No surprise, weight and smoking play major roles in the health of both pregnant women and their babies. According to a new study by Queen Mary University of London, obesity before and during pregnancy can increase the risk of pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, hypertension, and premature birth. For the baby, there is also the risk of childhood obesity.

A healthy diet customized to the needs of the mother, along with monitored exercise, can help control excessive weight before and during pregnancy.

We already know about the dangers of smoking. For smokers who become pregnant, there are fewer treatment options. That's because, according to the College of Family Physicians in Canada, common nicotine replacement therapies carry health risks for both mom and baby.

Behavioral therapies and education programs are the first line of defense for pregnant women who smoke.
