I was asked to write a Top Ten list about activities that will help you enjoy the natural wonders of summer even more, but I ran out of space after number seven. So, here is my Top Seven activities that I think you will enjoy:

--Drink plenty of fluids, mostly water. Water helps to keep you hydrated and healthy during the summer. Making your own popsicles too is fun with water; add some lemon juice and a small amount of maple syrup and you'll have a cool refreshing treat to keep you cool.

--Enjoy outside activities (weather permitting). Most people love music; my family certainly does. In the summer in Washington D.C. there are free outdoor festivals and concerts almost every weekend. It a great cost effective way to enjoy the summertime. Be sure to take appropriate health precautions to prevent getting sunburn or heat exhaustion.

--Walk in the evenings after dinner with friends and family. When the sun is going down, it is a great time to get in some of your daily 10,000 steps. It is also a wonderful way to exercise and help your food digest while catching up on the lives of the people you love.

--Indulge in fresh fruits and vegetables. Summertime fruits and vegetables abound and they taste fresh and wonderful. Farmer’s markets will have in-season food that have been picked that day to eat. Enjoy the sweetness of the season with good whole foods.

--Cook with herbs and spices. Five years ago a patient gave me four potted herb plants so now I have my own little garden. Cooking with fresh herbs makes any dish taste better. Try i--you will see.

--Take time to be in nature. Summer is a great time to take a moment and enjoy the nature all around you. I walk around botanical gardens for the shade, the beauty and the serenity. It is a great Sunday afternoon getaway.

--Plan a long weekend or vacation to get away. When it is hot people move more slowly and want to keep it simple. This makes summer the ideal time to take a long weekend or vacation to think about your goals for your life, your career, and/or your relationships. Slow down and enjoy the lazy days of summer. Fall will be here before you know it.
