Q:

Toddler limping and knee or ankle "giving out" without pain, redness or swelling. What could it be?

My friend's 2 year old was playing on some slippery surface (a "sprinkler park"), and fell. She was not concerned (2 year olds fall all the time, and he had no visible scratches) at first, but when he would try to walk, his knee (or hip or ankle?) would kind of "buckle" underneath him. He is not in any pain; no reddness or swelling either. He is jumping and squatting, but walking strangely. The most noticeable was an hour later: he went to kick a ball with his right leg, while standing on his left leg...and his left leg just "gave out". We can't notice any deformities or anything.

We called the nurse-on-call after-hours (it's a Sunday), and were told to do the "wait and see". Give him ibuprofen if it swells. He is eating and sleeping fine. If he still has trouble tomorrow morning, my friend will take him to the doctor.

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Nurse said if strain, sprain or dislocation, there would be pain and he would not voluntarily move the injured leg. He is not doing this for attention, so can rule that out, too. What injury could this be, without pain?

I am having the same thing with my 5 year olds knee just buckling when walking she then falls i would suggest a child podiatrist they specialize in feet and legs etc. A primary will not be able to diagnose as good as them. My daughter has a appt on June 27th hope all is well with her it's very scary!!!

Have you called your daughter's pediatrician, to let them know the pain is relieved but she is still limping? If the doctor does not hear back from you, s/he will assume everything is fine.

Please follow-up with the pediatrician to talk about next steps for your daughter's treatment.

Sorry - to clarify in my previous post - my son's leg just suddenly gave out on him without any reason and without any pain it seems. He's resorted to crawling for the last hour just fine and moves around with no problems but can't seem to stand up and walk without his leg crumpling on him again.

Please call your son's pediatrician. It really does not matter if other people's toddler was officially diagnosed, given a "wait and see", if they had a spinal infection, or even an injury that was not witnessed (toddlers just beginning to walk do get lots of bumps and bruises!).

It is important that your 17 month old son be properly diagnosed, regardless of what someone else's experience is...they just do not relate. If your son suddenly can no longer walk, and is resorting to crawling, please call his doctor and talk with a nurse about his symptoms. He needs to be checked to rule out any possible physical (or behavioral) causes.

Same thing just happened to my 17 month old son about an hour ago. I'm glad to find other people who've had a similar experience. I read online where a doctor responded to a lady's question (just like this one) and said it could be a disk infection in the spinal cord. Has anyone gotten a solid diagnosis out of a doctor yet? Or has it all been, "wait and see" so far? My nanny said her son had a similar experience a few years ago - he's 4 now and seems to be fine, but had no official diagnosis either.

My pd prescribed him Nurofen(for high fever), since he is having cough n flu before the limping happened on him it might cause by some infection due to the mucus. After taking Nurofen for two days, his limping is gone. Hope this helps.

hi, i'm beccy. my 2.5yr old has been suffering with this for some time now. he can be walking and running about fine (like a 2yr old does) and jumping on his trampoline and general playing one minute and be down on the floor next. my difference is that he actaully says "Mummy my leg hurts". i have taken him to a GP in the past and they simply told me to monitor it and to take him back if it was persistent, but it is not. he squats fine. he does complain most mornings whilst walking upstairs that his leg hurts but i dont know if he is telling the truth or not. the most recent event was just this last sunday (feb 2011). it was a particuarly bad incident as he fell down a couple of stairs. he was terribly upset and appeared to be in quite a lot of pain. i am rtying to get him an appt with the GP but they are rubbish and do not allow you book in advance and when you call for an appt on the day, all the appts are bloody taken - should I deem this as an emergency appt?????

Yes, I would take him to the E.R. if he had an accident and is complaining about a hurt leg---he could have an injury that you would want to rule out.

You may also want to find another pediatrician who can talk with you about behavior issues and/or if this is a form of your 2.5 year old trying to get your attention/communicate (behavioral) versus ruling out possible physical conditions. A child psychologist could help discern the difference between behavioral or physical condition, too!

Please rule-out injury first...let us know the update!
