Dr. Raiszadeh:
Cervical reconstruction has undergone significant evolution over time. One of the main procedures that was done in the past was fusion of the neck, and that was the only procedure we really had when neck conditions became too severe.
Nowadays we can do a cervical decompression, meaning taking pressure off the nerves for arm pain and severe neck pain, and then do a disc replacement to where we keep the motion of the spine. And this has been a great addition to our surgical treatment because now you can then take a segment that needs to work together as a chain and be able to keep the motion in that segment rather than stiffening it up with surgery.
