VIDEO: Dr. Harness - What Is Paget's Disease?

Dr. Harness explains Paget's disease. Dr. Jay K. Harness is the former President of the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Medical Director of the St. Joseph Hospital Comprehensive Breast Center in the city of Orange in Orange County California.

Dr. Harness:
Paget’s disease, when we talk about Paget’s of the breast (Paget’s was obviously the name of a person who described different types of Paget’s disease) but Paget’s of the breast is sadly sometimes misdiagnosed as eczema of the nipple-areola area, the heartbreak of eczema, treated with some steroid creams. But what it really is, it is an extension, a very treatable in situ breast cancer (in situ means the cancer cells remain confined to ducts) up the ductal system into the nipple, and the areola a little bit, but mainly in the nipple, where it starts getting really scaly and flaking, and what have you. It is true you can get eczema, if you will, of the nipple or areolar area but very unusual. If a patient has something like that, she clearly needs mammograms right away and clearly needs to be seen by a breast specialist.

Graduating medical school from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, he conducting his internship and residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Recognized nationally and internationally for his work in breast and endocrine surgery, Dr. Harness is the immediate past-President of The American Society of Breast Surgeons and is President-elect of Breast Surgery International.
