Sarah:

MS can be a great litmus test when you are dating somebody. I told my husband, probably on our third date, that I have MS, and when I first met him I was in the middle of an exacerbation. I had an eye-patch on, I think I still had IVs in my arm, and I was just not looking my best. He couldn’t see the IVs because I had long sleeves, but he really didn’t give me the time of day. And it took several months before we started dating, and when I did tell him, he didn’t know what to make of it. He didn’t know anything about MS and I told him, he said, “Well,” and he asked, “What’s your prognosis?”

I said, “I don’t know. What are your chances of getting hit by a bus and ending up in a wheelchair tomorrow?” And he thought about that and he said, “You’re right,” and he decided that this was something he wanted to go forward with. And I think for any woman who is single and who is afraid of ending up single that no, it’s just going to help you find the right person, who is going to be there and who is going to support you.

I think it’s harder for couples who are married and then get the diagnosis because it does change who you are and how you, how you live your life, and so I think couples have a harder time adjusting.
