Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is a serious infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. It is transmitted through contact with an infected person’s blood, semen or other bodily fluid. The first dose of the vaccine is administered at birth, before hospital discharge. The second dose is given one month later and the third dose is given six months later. The series of three injections should be completed by 6 to 18 months of age. Children and adolescents through the age of 18, who were not vaccinated when they were younger, should be vaccinated. Adults who are at high risk for exposure to the hepatitis B virus because of occupation, treatment such as dialysis, or lifestyle choices should receive the vaccine.
