Dr. Shyam Dahiya explains how a woman can advocate for herself if her doctor does not recommend bariatric surgery.
Dr. Dahiya:
Even in this day and age, you know, when we have known that it’s a disease and we know that its not under a patient’s control, but still there are some physicians who don’t believe in it, and they still tend to think that exercise can solve all of this or less eating and so forth. So you do have to be proactive. You do have to somewhere say, “You know, I have tried all of those. I have tried the dieting. The doctor recommended this; I have done all of those. All that I can do.” Then you have to be proactive.
When we say the diets don’t work, I don’t mean to say that you can’t lose weight. The problem with the diet is that you lose 50; then you go back and gain 60. Then you lose another 50; you gain another 60. So you are always like 10 positive. It’s a, yo-yo, up and down, up and down, and in that sense, the diets don’t work, and that’s why you have to then be proactive and go look for a surgical option.
