Dr. Tsao explains how a woman should describe her hip pain to her doctor. Dr. Tsao's specialty interests include muscle sparing approaches and customization of surgical procedures and implants for individual patients at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Arizona.

Dr. Tsao:
Hip pain that is constant or intermittent are two factors in hip pain that we’re concerned about. Location is very key. Is the pain in the groin? Is it in the thigh? Is it in the back? Is it in the buttock? Those can all be different areas of the body because the hip is very close to the spine. Associated symptoms of numbness, tingling, which may or may not be related to hip pain but may be related to the spine, can help distinguish where the pain is coming from.

Pain that limits activity such as the golf swing, pain that limits things such as squatting or getting down to the commode or the toilet seat – those are all factors that are big problems and can tell me that the pain is very limiting.

Most patients will also describe pain in the hip that’s related to motion. If you have pain where you can’t get into and out of a car, pain where you can’t get up and down out of a truck or in and out of a high step such as a bus, those are things that are limiting with your hip that may require a surgical intervention.

Pain usually in the hip also can be alleviated by resting. So pain that is constant at night, that is un-alleviated by sitting or laying down is pain that puts the red flag up for a surgeon.
