Dr. Audrey Tsao
Hello, my name is Dr. Audrey Tsao. I am an orthopedic surgeon and I specialize in hip and knee reconstruction in the adults. I practice at Banner Del E. Webb, Banner Boswell, and Banner Estrella hospitals in the west side of Phoenix. My practice is based in Surprise, Sun City, Sun City west and Litchfield Park and I see patients in Phoenix on the west valley in the northern area and the northwest area of Phoenix.

I think if you’re looking for an orthopedic surgeon to do a hip replacement you obviously want to find a good fit for you as the patient. One of the ways that you can do that I think initially is speaking about this with your primary care physician. Most primary care physicians know the surgeons in the area, know their skill level, and also what they specialize in.

I think the other thing you can do is ask those patients around you, your neighbors, your friends, who often times have a lot of experience with orthopedic surgeons themselves. I think when you look at the credentials of the orthopedic surgeon that you’re asking to do a hip or knee replacement you can look at their training, what medical school they went to, what residency they did, what fellowship training that they might have, as well as looking at the number of years they have been in practice, the number of hip and knee replacements they might particularly do, and if they specialize in difficult cases or if they specialize in revision work.

All those factors I think are issues that you can look at, but most importantly I think that you need to have an orthopedic surgeon that you love and that you can speak with and that you get along. More than anything else that’s going to determine how you do.

Hi Doctor Tsao, I was wondering how safe hip replacement surgery is and what risks are involved? I read this article http://www.medic41.com/articles/why-the-depuy-hip-replacement-recall about replacement recalls and it worries me to think that some people have to undergo another surgery because the first one did not go well.
