Intermittent toe pain on 4th toe

When I first get out of bed I have terrible pain under my 4th toe of my left foot. It is hard to walk-- I have to limp. After about 15-20 min it goes away. I'm usually fine during the day and then towards the end of the day, it returns. I've looked up neuroma but the pain is only on the bottom side of my 4th toe. Could it be something else? Thanks!!

I started working out in August and went to a running store to get fitted for sneakers because my old ones gave me pain the the shins. I have pronation, ankles turn in. About a month after wearing my new shoes, I also have this pain in my toe. I would say it like there is a water bubble and when I roll on my toes to walk it rolls and gives me pain like nerve pain, numbness. I went back to my old shoes, ankels turning in and hardly any pain in the 4th toe. So I beleive it is my shoes. My toe is not used to the pressure after I corrected my ankle turning and I run on my full foot. I bought a gel toe insert to spread my toe and it helped. I may need an orthodic to take pressure off toe area I think. This is my conclusion after many internet searches. Glad I am not alone!

I am in the same situation ... right foot 3 and 4th toes are sore when i walk, but if i bend or prod it doesn't hurt at all. sometimes it is excruciating and others it feels more like an annoyance ... It seems to have started out with numbness about 8 months ago and in the mornings it feels like it needs to crack and walking normally is diffucult - now it is sore most of the day when i move! what is the treatment?

Did you ever find out what this was? I have the very same thing except that my pain seems to last for about 24hrs. Then goes away. All the descreptions I have read on Mortons Neuroma say the pain is between the toes but this is definately under my 4th toe and feels like someone is sticking a sharp object in.

I have had a Morton's Neuroma on my right foot and cronic "sideways" hammertoe on my left. The pain is not the same. The Neuroma is much more of a nerve pain and as the tumour grows once you realize you had it, you will realize that you could feel it (but you realize this when it's gone, when I had surgery on that, they said it was fairly large - surgery cured it). A lot of people suffer from hammertoe. It is chronic. I am the same as the writer when I get out of bed. I can only walk with shoes on for about 2 hours max (flat shoes for years). Summer is better because I can wear my sandals (good ones). I have had surgery to shorten the toe but it has gone right back to where it was before surgery. It is driving me crazy honestly.

I am having this very same problem! It's exactly as you desctribe. Did you ever find out whether it was Morton's Neuroma, or something else? Thanks.

You're so welcome. I'll be eager to see what you have to say.

Thank you for taking the time to help me! I am a stay-at-home mom and so I'm usually barefoot or sock-footed during the day. I haven't worn high heels in about a year. And if I do wear them, it would just be for a special occasion. The weird thing is that the pain comes and goes. Yesterday we had a family walk in the forest and the first half of the walk it was fine, but not the last half. this morning it bothered me for 15 min and hasn't again. I will look again at Morton's Neuroma details after my kids go to bed. Thanks again!!!

DomesticRuby,

Hi! I have a question; is it possible that you have made a habit of wearing high heels, or shoes that are too narrow (something I am often guilty of), and that your fourth toe is the one getting squeezed?

Here's a page on toe pain from The Podiatry Channel. It mentions how common toe pain is, and tells of some of the common causes:

http://www.podiatrychannel.com/foot-pain/toe-pain.shtml

And I know you said you looked up neuroma, but I also want you to look at this page on Morton's Neuroma to see if it could be the problem. Morton's is nerve pain caused by compression of the nerves in a tight space, and it mentions specifically the nerves between the third and fourth toe:

http://www.podiatrychannel.com/mortonneuroma/index.shtml

Do either of these sound like the possible cause of your problem?

Are you sure you don't have a broken toe? I mean there is usually nothing you can do for a broken toe besides let it heal itself (as it would be pretty funny walking around with a casted toe), but you may have broken it and it is healing. Have you went to your physician? What did he/she say? How long has the pain been occurring? Is this recent?
